What the switch-off really means

You may have heard on the news that landlines are changing. Here is what is actually happening, in plain English.

The old analogue telephone network, sometimes called the PSTN, is being replaced across the UK. It is a national change led by the phone companies, not something you have done wrong or need to fix on your own.

Home phones themselves are not disappearing. Calls will simply travel over a modern digital connection instead of the old copper wires. For most people, the experience feels the same: you pick up your phone, dial a number, and have a conversation.

And the good news? In most cases you can keep your existing phone number and carry on calling family, friends and the doctor just as you do today.

"Can I keep my number and handset?"

These are the questions we are asked most often. Here are the honest answers.

Keep your number

Yes, usually

Most home phone numbers can be transferred to a digital service. You would keep the same number your family, GP and friends already have for you.

Keep your handset

Lady with landline

Often yes

Many familiar home phones can still be used. Sometimes they plug into your router, and sometimes a small adapter is needed. We’ll check for you before anything changes.

No broadband? Still options

People who still use and rely on their landline every day.

Families helping a parent or relative stay connected.

Customers who want clear, patient support through the switch.

Taking extra care explaining landline options

Extra care for vulnerable households

Some people depend on their home phone more than most — for a pendant alarm, a telecare service, or a medical device, or because there is no mobile signal nearby. Please tell us if this is you or the person you are helping.

We’ll check whether your current alarm or telecare device is compatible before anything changes.

We’ll explain what happens in a power cut, and the options available to keep you covered.

You can ask to be registered as a priority customer so you get extra support during the switch.

We will never rush you, and nothing happens until you’re happy to go ahead.

If you’re unsure, please call us on 0333 015 1511 and we’ll talk it through at your pace.

How it works three simple steps

2. Confirm the right option

A UK-based adviser will talk you through your choices in plain English. There’s no pressure and no obligation.

3. Keep your number, carry on calling

We’ll transfer your number, help you get set up at home, and stay on hand if you need us afterwards.

Your questions, answered

In most cases, yes. Your existing number can usually be transferred to a digital home phone service so friends, family and the GP can still reach you on the same number. We’ll confirm this for you before any change is made.

Most existing home phones, including familiar corded and cordless models, can still be used. Sometimes the phone plugs directly into your broadband router. In other cases a small adapter is used. We’ll check before your switch so nothing is a surprise.

Not always. If you already have broadband, your home phone can use that. If you don’t have broadband, or don’t want any, there are dedicated landline-style replacements designed for that situation. Please call us and we’ll talk through your options.

Digital home phones need power to work, so in a power cut a corded home phone plugged into the router will not make calls the way some older analogue phones could. There are back-up options available — for example, a battery back-up unit or a mobile. If you are a vulnerable customer or rely on your phone in an emergency, please tell us and we’ll talk through the right solution for you.

Some alarms work perfectly on a digital home phone, and some do not. It’s very important to check before anything changes. Please tell us if you, or someone in your household, uses a pendant alarm, fall alarm, telecare box or monitored medical device. We’ll help you confirm compatibility with the alarm provider before we switch you over.

Yes. The old analogue (PSTN) network is being retired across the UK and is planned to be fully switched off by the end of January 2027. Different providers and areas are moving at slightly different speeds, but it affects everyone with a traditional landline sooner or later.

Yes. Extra support is available for customers who depend on their home phone, have accessibility needs, or live in areas with no mobile signal. This can include priority registration, compatibility checks, and more time to make the switch at your own pace. Just let us know when you call.

A modern home phone service often costs the same or less than a traditional landline, but it depends on your current package and which option you choose. Our advisers will explain the costs clearly and in writing before you agree to anything.

Absolutely. We speak to family members every day. With your parent’s permission we’ll guide you both through the options, and we’re happy to send information in writing so you can take your time deciding together.
